This contemporary new build is situated on an ‘infill’ site between a series of traditional bungalows in rural Mid Ulster. The dwelling has views over the rolling countryside towards the North Coast. The design is an exploration of traditional pitched forms that stagger along the site, and are delicately linked with a flat roof connection. A dramatic cantilever defines the front entrance, while the use of timber creates a warm and welcoming arrival. The house works with the natural contours of the site by incorporating a change of level internally from front to back. It is designed and orientated to ensure that the living and kitchen spaces take full advantage of the afternoon and evening sun, as well as all the benefits that modern open plan living bring.

The separation of the individual blocks also allows for a functional plan that is easily divided into public and private zones within the dwelling. The natural materials of stained timber and natural slate cladding against the smooth painted render allow the dwelling to not only blend into but enhance its rural context.
